Checkbox
A checkbox lets the learner independently select one or more options in a list, or turn a setting on and off. Each checkbox works autonomously: checking one has no effect on the others.

When to use a checkbox
- Multiple choice: several possible answers within a single list.
- Independent binary setting: turning an option on or off (subtitles, sound, display mode).
- Confirming a condition: accepting an instruction, confirming that something has been read.
When not to use a checkbox
- Single, exclusive choice: use radio buttons.
- Immediately triggering an action: use a button; a checkbox expresses a state, not an action.
- Very long list of options: prefer grouping by category or a choice list.
since the March 2026 update, screen readers announce the checkbox and its Alt text as a single element. Require an up-to-date version of Storyline.

Implementation
- Go to Insert → Data Entry
- Choose the checkbox style adopted by the design system
- Draw the insertion area on the slide
- Rename the generated variable with an explicit name
Label for each checkbox :
- Right-click on the checkbox → "Edit Text"
- Enter an explicit, unique label
- A label entered this way is bound to the checkbox: never place it in a separate text box, as the association would be lost
States and colors :
- Define the color of the checked state (double-click on the checkbox).
- Minimum contrast of 3:1 between checked, unchecked, and background.
- The check mark must remain perceptible in grayscale: never convey information by color alone.
Screen reader output: since the March 2026 update, screen readers announce the checkbox and its Alt text as a single element. Require an up-to-date version of Storyline.
Forbidden:
Using a checkbox as an action button or a navigation element
Wording a label as a double negative
Repurposing a checkbox as an immediate-activation switch
